Yoo Ah-in Released on Probation After Reduced Sentence in Appeal
Actor Yoo Ah-in, who was sentenced to prison in the first trial for habitual drug use, has been released on probation after receiving a reduced sentence in his appeal.
On February 18, the Seoul High Court sentenced Yoo to one year in prison, suspended for two years, along with a fine of 2 million KRW. The court also imposed 80 hours of community service, 40 hours of drug treatment education, and a forfeiture of approximately 1.54 million KRW.
In the first trial, Yoo was sentenced to one year in prison and immediately detained.
The court explained that Yoo had exploited the system by using the names of family and acquaintances to commit his crimes. However, mitigating factors, including his struggles with insomnia and depression, were taken into account. The court acknowledged his progress in overcoming his drug dependency and his commitment not to re-offend.
The court also considered the fact that Yoo had reflected on his actions during detention and had no prior criminal record. It concluded that the initial sentence was excessively harsh.
After the verdict, Yoo bowed deeply in gratitude toward the judges.
